Moses Sebagabo writes about the impact
of the well in Namanyonyi

For long, community members in Namanyonyi have been faced with a scarcity of water especially in the dry seasons. We have been getting water from open wells which even have frogs. When we get water, our lives will be changed. Getting safe water means getting a safer life. We will get rid of water borne diseases like Birhazia, typhoid, Cholera, etc.

The water will improve on our good existing friendship between Abayudaya members as a whole and the non Jews in the area. Having water nearby will also be helpful to us in the observance of Shabbat. We have been going for water far from the village which has been a hindrance to our Shabbat observance, especially on Kabbalat Shabbat.

The survey for the new well in Namanyonyi was completed and the location has been selected. The drilling site is situated in a good place for a number of reasons. The site is in one of our community member's garden. This means we will not have to incur the additional costs of buying that portion of land. It is also in a place where there is already an existing electric pole. The village of Namanyonyi is located along a road. The tap stands will extend for over 100 meters along the road so that the majority of the inhabitants will have access to water.

The Construction Committee of the Abayudaya Executive Council reviewed a number of bids for the well. They have selected a company and the drilling will begin this month.

Moses Sebagabo has been the Hazan of Namanyonyi Synagogue for over nine years. He is also a student at Law Development Center in Kampala studying completing a Post Graduate Diploma in a Bar Course. He will be graduating as a lawyer next year.
